Abstract

This essay reviews the writings of the great Extremaduran scholar Bartolomé José Gallardo (1776-1852) that can serve to build his own image as an author. In his enormous production —from the most personal, like his letters, to the most public of his polemical and erudition texts— one can read confessions of a personal nature about his status as a writer and a liberal citizen, a lover of books and a voracious reader, that help us approach a fairly complete self-image of who he was.
